Complex Attention

Complex attention refers to the advanced level of cognitive processing involved in focusing on multiple aspects of the environment simultaneously. It encompasses abilities such as dividing attention between multiple tasks or stimuli (multitasking), sustaining attention over time (vigilance), and selectively focusing on specific information while ignoring distractions.

In practical terms, complex attention is crucial in everyday activities that require you to process a lot of information at once, like driving a car in busy traffic (where you have to monitor multiple vehicles, traffic signals, and road signs), working in a hectic office environment, or even engaging in conversations in a noisy room. It’s a higher-order cognitive skill that builds upon basic attentional processes, integrating them with other cognitive functions like memory, problem-solving, and decision-making.
